Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care to Manage New Maldivian Hospital

Selangor, 12 April 2015 - Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care today announced that it has been awarded a contract by Maldivian investment company Tree Top Health Private Limited, to manage a new state-of-the-art private hospital in the island nation of Maldives.

Top Tree Health has already purchased a parcel of land in the residential island of Hulhumalé for the upcoming hospital and its support services. Hulhumalé, located in the south of North Malé Atoll, is an island that began reclamation in 1997 to meet local demands for housing, commercial and industrial land. Since then, it has grown tremendously and now boasts residential areas, hotels and there are even plans for an airport.

The healthcare industry in the Maldives is presently driven by the public sector, which is made up of one tertiary hospital IGMH, eight regional hospitals and 14 atoll hospitals. In addition, there are two private hospitals in Male’, with one hospital providing similar services to IGMH and the other, catering to only outpatients. There are also a small number of privately run clinics in the island nation.

Maldives currently has a population of 350,000 people and this figure is expected to increase within the next five years as plans are already underway to double the size of Hulhumalé through land reclamation.

The proposed 159-bed hospital will be the first private hospital in Hulhumalé and is expected to cater to the island nation’s growing population, expatriate workers, as well as serve the vast number of tourists who visit the Maldives.

The new hospital, named “Tree Top Hospital”, is slated for completion in November 2016 and fully operational to receive patients in March 2017. It will provide Maldivians, expatriates and tourists with quality medical care. The hospital will be a secondary care hospital and intends to establish cardiology as one of its major specialty areas. Tree Top Health has appointed a foreign hospital design and construction company to ensure that the hospital building and services meet internationally acceptable standards.

Tree Top Hospital will consist of two buildings. The hospital will be housed in the main building with a total floor area of approximately 20,000 square meters. The second structure will be an 8-storey building of approximately 10,000 square meters and will house support services such as accommodation for staff, and relatives and friends of patients, restaurants and retail outlets.

Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care has been engaged to assist in the planning, design and commissioning of the hospital. Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care will operate the hospital as part of its Management & Consultancy Services business.

“Many local hospitals provide only limited medical services with patients having to leave the Maldives to obtain more specialized services such as interventional cardiology, neurology and critical care. In seeking treatment abroad both the patients and the state incur significantly increased medical costs,” said Bronte Kumm, Group CEO of Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care.

“Based on the hospital’s performance in the first phase of development, we envisage increasing the hospital bed capacity to its maximum of 159 beds. This growth will support a more diverse range of specialties which will contribute significantly to making this hospital one of international standard,” added Kumm.

Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care will also advise Tree Top Health in determining the types of services and areas of specialty that will be offered in the new hospital. This multi-disciplinary hospital will cater to various medical disciplines including 28 consultation clinics, an imaging centre, a dialysis centre, laboratory services, endoscopy, a rehabilitative centre and a central pharmacy. Tree Top Hospital will also have a comprehensive health screening centre promoting wellness and healthy lifestyle.

In addition, Tree Top Hospital is expected to establish affiliations with Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care hospitals and its entities to cater to patients who need sub-specialised care.

“Our existing medical facilities in Malaysia are well credentialed, credentials which include the prestigious international JCI accreditation standard. The numerous clinical milestones and quality awards we have achieved in the Subang Jaya Medical Centre, coupled with the highly regarded expertise of our medical professionals, have earned us the trust of our Malaysian and international patients.” Kumm said

“Building on this strength and expertise, Tree Top Hospital will continue the tradition of delivering healthcare excellence that has been the mission of Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care over the past years”, he added.
