Kent Knight, General Manager of Technology, Automation and Electrification at Hastings Deering, has been an integral part of the company since 2001. His journey began as an apprentice Diesel Mechanic. He was drawn to the opportunity to apply his trade skills to a globally recognised brand, setting the stage for a career defined by growth and innovation.
Starting as an apprentice, he moved into field service, covering an expanse of over 600,000 km². The surge in mining and coal seam gas activities in South-east Queensland’s Surat Basin facilitated his transition into a product support role, where he honed his skills in customer relations and contract management.
Kent was instrumental in establishing the Centre of Excellence for rebuilding G3600 engines in Toowoomba. This initiative created a strong base for Hastings Deering to enter the oil and gas industry. He later expanded his expertise by managing corporate contracts and contributing to the integration of Bucyrus products into the company’s portfolio following Caterpillar's acquisition.
Kent's role in Mackay with the Expanded Mining Product team allowed him to diversify his experience with a range of equipment, from draglines to underground longwalls. During this time, he also successfully arranged to move back to Brisbane to be closer to home.
As Kent advanced through various leadership positions, he continued to make impactful contributions. His management of the BHP account involved negotiating a significant global agreement and overseeing the implementation of the first autonomous mine site in Queensland. These accomplishments earned him and his team the Managing Director’s Award for their innovative efforts.
In his current role, Kent focuses on steering the company towards future-oriented technologies. His typical day involves collaborating with peers on technology sales, working closely with Caterpillar and helping shape Hastings Deering's strategy for electrification and automation. This role not only fits his technical expertise but also his passion for solving complex problems and leading dynamic teams.
In a wide and varied career so far, Kent acknowledges that alongside the opportunities, there has also been challenges, particularly in adapting to the industry's evolving demands. Decarbonisation and the shift towards electric and automated solutions are at the forefront of these challenges. However, Kent’s drive to provide an enriched life for his family and his dedication to Hastings Deering’s future keep him motivated.
A strong focus on continuous learning and development has also seen Kent develop a broad skills set, ranging from technical proficiency to strategic leadership. Hastings Deering has supported his growth through various programmes, including an Executive MBA and numerous mentoring opportunities. His experience across different locations and departments has been instrumental in his development.
Kent credits the company’s supportive culture for much of his professional growth. Hastings Deering’s commitment to engaging with employees, reflected in work-life balance initiatives helps foster a positive work environment. This culture has not only helped Kent balance work and life effectively but also allowed him to lead with empathy and adaptability.
Looking ahead, Kent aspires to support the transformation of Hastings Deering into a technology and electrification-led business. His vision aligns with the company's strategy to remain at the forefront of innovation in the heavy machinery industry.
